Why Clients Compensate During Pilates (And What They're Actually Telling You)

One of the biggest mindset shifts a Pilates instructor can make is realising that compensations are not mistakes.


They're information.


Great instructors don't just spot compensations, they understand what they mean.

When a client hikes their shoulders during arm work, arches their lower back during footwork, grips with their hip flexors instead of feeling their abdominals, or shifts all their weight onto one leg during standing exercises, they're not trying to do the exercise incorrectly.


Their nervous system is simply choosing the movement strategy it currently believes is the safest and most efficient way to complete the task.


As instructors, it's easy to become focused on correcting what we see.

"Keep your ribs down."


"Don't shrug."


"Stay neutral."


"Use your glutes."


But unless we understand why the compensation is happening, we're often just treating the symptom rather than addressing the cause.


The instructors who become truly exceptional aren't the ones who spot the most compensations.


They're the ones who understand what those compensations actually mean.


What Is A Compensation?

A compensation is simply an alternative movement strategy.


The body has one primary goal:


Complete the task.


If one muscle isn't producing enough force...


If one joint lacks mobility...


If one area is painful...


If balance feels threatened...


The nervous system immediately finds another way.


It doesn't care whether the movement looks "perfect."


It cares whether you survive the task.


From an evolutionary perspective, that's incredibly clever.


From a teaching perspective, it means we need to stop viewing compensations as bad movement and start viewing them as useful information.


The Brain Doesn't Think In Individual Muscles

One of the biggest misconceptions in Pilates education is that the brain switches individual muscles on and off.


It doesn't.


The brain thinks in movement patterns.


When someone stands up from a chair, the brain isn't consciously selecting:

"Now glute max."


"Now quadriceps."


"Now hamstrings."


Instead, it produces an entire movement strategy based on previous experience, current strength, mobility, pain, fatigue and confidence.


That strategy becomes increasingly automatic over time.


This explains why simply telling someone to "activate their glutes" often changes very little.


You're asking the brain to completely rewrite a movement program that may have existed for years.


That doesn't happen from one verbal cue.


Why Compensations Happen

There are many reasons why a client may compensate during an exercise.


Understanding these helps guide your programming far more effectively than simply correcting alignment.


1. Insufficient Strength

This is probably the most common reason.


If the target muscles simply don't have enough capacity to complete the task, the body recruits help elsewhere.


For example:

A client performing standing scooter on the reformer may begin using their lumbar extensors instead of their glute max.


Not because they're doing it incorrectly.


Because their glute simply can't currently generate enough force.


The compensation is solving the problem.


The solution isn't better cueing.


The solution is gradually building the capacity of the glute.


2. Limited Mobility

Sometimes the body physically cannot access the position you're asking for.


Imagine asking someone to perform a deep squat.


If their ankle dorsiflexion is limited, they may:

• lift their heels

• excessively lean forwards

• rotate the feet

• flex through the lumbar spine

The body isn't choosing poor movement.


It's choosing the only movement currently available.


Mobility limitations often create compensations that no amount of verbal coaching can eliminate.


3. Pain

Pain changes movement.


Almost instantly.


Research consistently shows that people experiencing pain often alter muscle recruitment, joint loading and movement patterns.


Sometimes these changes reduce tissue stress.


Sometimes they don't.


But they almost always change how someone moves.


A client with shoulder pain may elevate their shoulder earlier during arm elevation.


A client with Achilles tendinopathy may shorten their stride.


A client with hip pain may shift more weight onto the opposite leg.


These compensations aren't always something to correct immediately.


Sometimes they're part of the body's temporary protective strategy.


4. Fatigue

Movement quality changes as fatigue increases.


This is completely normal.


The body begins recruiting additional muscles to complete the task.


This isn't necessarily poor technique.


Sometimes it's simply evidence that the exercise is challenging enough to stimulate adaptation.


The important question becomes:


Is the compensation acceptable?


Or is it increasing injury risk?


Knowing the difference comes with understanding biomechanics, not memorising cues.


5. Lack Of Motor Control

Sometimes the client has enough strength.


Enough mobility.


No pain.


Yet they still can't perform the movement efficiently.


This is often a motor control issue.


The nervous system simply hasn't learned that movement pattern yet.


This is particularly common with:

• scapular control

• pelvic positioning

• rib cage control

• deep neck flexors

• hip dissociation


These clients don't necessarily need more strengthening.


They need better movement practice.


The Problem With Chasing Perfect Technique

Many instructors spend entire classes correcting tiny alignment details.


Shoulders.


Hands.


Feet.


Ribs.


Pelvis.


Head.


By the end of class the client feels overwhelmed.


Research into motor learning suggests this approach often reduces learning.


Too much conscious control actually interferes with automatic movement.


Clients become dependent on constant correction.


Instead of learning to move independently.


Ask Better Questions

Rather than asking:

"How do I stop this compensation?"


Try asking:

Why is it happening?


Is it strength?


Mobility?


Pain?


Fear?


Fatigue?


Motor control?


When you understand the reason, the solution becomes much clearer.


Real Pilates Examples

Example 1

A client grips through their hip flexors during tabletop.


Most instructors cue:

"Use your core."


A better question is:

Can they actually control the weight of their legs?


Perhaps reducing the lever length immediately removes the compensation.


Now you're strengthening rather than fighting the movement.


Example 2

A client continually arches their lumbar spine during bridging.


Rather than repeatedly cueing neutral pelvis, consider:


Do they actually have enough hip extension?


Are their glutes producing enough force?


Are their hamstrings dominating?


Is thoracic extension limited?


Suddenly the bridge becomes an assessment rather than simply an exercise.


Example 3

A client constantly shrugs during arm work.


Instead of endlessly saying "relax your shoulders", ask:


Can the lower trapezius actually control the scapula?


Is serratus anterior contributing?


Is the load simply too high?


Changing spring tension may solve the problem faster than another ten cues.


Programming Changes Everything

Once you understand compensation, your programming changes.


Instead of constantly correcting movement, you begin designing exercises that solve the underlying limitation.


If strength is the issue...


Progress loading.


If mobility is the issue...


Improve available range.


If motor control is the issue...


Simplify the task.


If fatigue is driving the compensation...


Adjust volume.


If pain is the issue...


Modify load and refer appropriately when necessary.


Programming becomes proactive rather than reactive.


Better Coaching Creates Independent Clients

One of the goals of great teaching is making yourself less necessary.


Clients shouldn't need constant correction forever.


They should gradually become capable of recognising movement themselves.


That only happens when instructors stop relying on endless cueing and start improving the client's actual capacity.


The strongest instructors don't simply teach exercises.


They teach better movement strategies.


Professional Reflection

Compensations are one of the richest sources of information available to a Pilates instructor.


Every shoulder shrug.


Every hip shift.


Every lumbar extension.


Every knee valgus.


Every rib flare.


They're all telling you something.


The question is whether you're listening.


When you stop viewing compensations as problems and start viewing them as assessments, your coaching becomes calmer, your programming becomes more purposeful, and your clients progress much faster.
