How To Progress A Pilates Exercise Properly: Why “Make It Harder” Isn’t A Programming Strategy
Pilates instructors are taught a lot of exercises.
Beginner exercises.
Intermediate exercises.
Advanced exercises.
Progressions.
Regressions.
Layering.

But knowing a harder-looking version of an exercise is not the same thing as understanding how to progress an exercise well.
A progression should have a reason.
It should change the demand in a way that moves the client closer to the outcome you’re actually trying to create.
That might mean increasing:
strength demand
range of motion
balance
coordination
endurance
control
power
confidence under load
The problem is that Pilates progressions are often treated as choreography.
The client completes version one, so we add arms.
Then rotation.
Then a prop.
Then another movement.
Then a balance challenge.
By the end, the exercise may look more advanced, but it isn’t necessarily providing a better training stimulus.
Sometimes it is simply more complicated.
If we want to programme well, we need to stop asking:
“How can I make this exercise harder?”
and start asking:
“What exactly am I trying to progress?”
Progression Should Reflect The Goal
Every progression should begin with the intended outcome.
If the goal is strength, progress strength.
If the goal is balance, progress balance.
If the goal is mobility, progress range.
If the goal is motor control, progress control.
If the goal is power, progress speed appropriately.

The problem is that instructors often increase complexity when the real goal is something else.
For example, imagine a client performing a bilateral bridge.
If your goal is glute strength, you could progress:
resistance
range
lever length
unilateral demand
time under tension
You do not automatically need to add:
arm choreography
a ball
rotation
an unstable prop
Those changes may create different demands, but they are not necessarily better strength progressions.
A good progression changes the variable that matters.
Harder And More Complex Are Not The Same Thing
This is one of the most important distinctions in Pilates programming.
An exercise can become more complex without becoming significantly more physically demanding.
Likewise, an exercise can become much more physically demanding without becoming more complex.
A heavy split squat is mechanically simple.
A complicated lunge sequence with multiple arm patterns may be highly complex.
Which is harder?
It depends on what you mean by harder.
The first may challenge strength much more.
The second may challenge:
coordination
memory
balance
timing
Both may be useful.
But they are not the same stimulus.

This is why “advanced” should not be defined by how impressive an exercise looks.
The Variables You Can Actually Progress
Pilates gives us a huge number of programming variables.
Instead of only thinking in terms of “beginner to advanced”, think about the specific variable you’re changing.
These include:
resistance
range of motion
lever length
base of support
stability
external support
unilateral loading
tempo
repetitions
sets
time under tension
coordination
sensory input
speed
power
Each one changes the exercise in a different way.
1. Progressing Resistance
This is the most obvious progression, but it is often underused in Pilates.
If the goal is strength, increasing resistance may be the most direct way to progress.
On the Reformer, that may involve changing spring resistance.
With Mat work, that may involve adding:
dumbbells
bands
ankle weights
external load
The key is understanding whether more spring actually increases demand in that specific exercise.
In some Reformer exercises, heavier springs increase resistance.
In others, they provide more assistance.
So “add a spring” is not automatically a progression.
You need to understand the mechanics of the movement.
2. Progressing Range Of Motion
Increasing range can make an exercise more demanding.
A deeper squat requires different mobility and strength than a shallow squat.
A larger lunge range increases the demand through the hips and knees.
A longer bridge range may increase posterior-chain demand.
Range should be progressed when the client can control the current range well and when more range is relevant to the goal.
Greater range is not inherently better.
It is simply another variable.
3. Progressing Lever Length
Longer levers often increase torque and therefore muscular demand.
For example:
A bent-knee abdominal exercise may be easier than the same movement with legs extended.
A shoulder exercise with elbows bent may be easier than with arms long.
A plank from knees is often less demanding than a full plank from toes.
This makes lever length a very useful progression tool.
It lets you increase challenge without completely changing the exercise.
4. Progressing From Bilateral To Unilateral
Moving from two limbs to one can significantly increase relative demand.
Examples include:
bilateral footwork to single-leg footwork
bilateral bridge to single-leg bridge
two-leg squat to split squat
double-arm work to single-arm work
This doesn’t only increase strength demand.
It may also increase:
balance
trunk control
pelvic control
coordination
That is why unilateral progression can be extremely useful.
But remember, you are changing more than one variable at once.
So be clear about why you are doing it.
5. Progressing Stability
Reducing stability can increase demand.
For example:
supported standing to unsupported standing
two hands on the bar to one hand
wide base of support to narrow
stable carriage position to more movement
But instability is often overused as a progression.
Making something less stable does not always make it a better strength exercise.
Sometimes it simply reduces how much force the client can produce because they are
too busy trying not to fall over.
If the goal is strength, excessive instability may actually limit the stimulus.
Use instability when balance or control is part of the goal.
6. Progressing Tempo
Tempo is one of the most underused variables in Pilates.
Slowing an exercise down can:
increase time under tension
reduce momentum
improve control
expose weak points
increase difficulty
For example, a slow three-second lowering phase during a split squat can make the exercise substantially more demanding without changing the exercise itself.
Tempo can also be progressed in the opposite direction.
If the goal is power, a faster concentric phase may eventually be appropriate.
Again, tempo should match intent.
7. Progressing Volume
Volume refers to how much work the client completes.
This can include:
repetitions
sets
total exercise time
Adding volume can be useful for endurance.
But more isn’t always better.
If you keep adding repetitions forever, you may simply shift the exercise toward endurance rather than strength.
A client who can complete 30 easy repetitions may benefit more from increased resistance than another 20 repetitions.
Progression should not default to “do more”.
8. Progressing Time Under Tension
Time under tension refers to how long the muscles are working during a set.
You can increase this through:
slower repetitions
pauses
isometric holds
longer eccentrics
This can be useful when you want to increase demand without changing load dramatically.
But once again, use it intentionally.
An endless hold is not automatically a better exercise.
9. Progressing Coordination
Adding coordination increases cognitive and motor demand.
Examples include:
adding arm movement
combining patterns
changing direction
introducing rotation
sequencing multiple movements
This can be useful for:
motor learning
coordination
cognitive challenge
class variety
But it should not be confused with physical progression.
If a client is already struggling to produce enough force, adding choreography may actually reduce the quality of the strength stimulus.
10. Progressing Speed And Power
Most Pilates programming is performed slowly and with control.
That is appropriate for many goals.
But some clients also need to develop the ability to produce force quickly.
This is relevant for:
healthy ageing
sport
balance recovery
athletic performance
Power-based progression may involve:
faster standing work
quicker concentric phases
more reactive tasks
appropriately selected jumping
This should be introduced only when the client has sufficient strength and control.
But avoiding speed forever can leave a gap in programming.

Reformer Footwork: A Better Progression Example
Let’s use footwork.
A common approach is:
bilateral footwork → heels → toes → wide stance → single leg → feet in straps.
But that is more of an exercise sequence than a true progression strategy.
If your goal is lower-body strength, you could instead manipulate:
Resistance
Increase spring resistance appropriately.
Range
Increase knee and hip flexion if suitable.
Tempo
Slow the lowering phase.
Unilateral Demand
Progress to single-leg work.
Volume
Add another set if needed.
External Load
Add weight where appropriate.
Now you are actually progressing the physical demand.
Bridge: Progression Without Random Layering
A bilateral bridge can be progressed in many ways.
You could:
Increase range.
Add external load.
Increase time under tension.
Extend the lever.
Progress to unilateral loading.
Add a pause at the top.
Increase resistance.
Each version changes a specific variable.
Compare that with:
bridge → bridge with arms → bridge with rotation → bridge with a ball → bridge with pulses
The second sequence may be creative.
But creativity is not automatically progression.
Plank: What Are You Actually Trying To Improve?
Planks are another great example.
If your goal is trunk endurance, you might increase hold time.
If your goal is upper-body loading, you might progress from:
knees
to toes
to longer lever
to more load
If your goal is shoulder stability, you might manipulate support.
If your goal is coordination, you could add limb movement.
The same basic exercise can be progressed in very different ways depending on what you are training.
That is programming.
Lunge: Progress The Demand, Not The Choreography
A lunge can be progressed through:
less external support
greater range
increased resistance
slower eccentric tempo
additional sets
longer lever
more unilateral demand
You do not need to immediately add:
rotation
arm choreography
a ball
a balance element
unless those qualities are relevant to the goal.
This is particularly important in group classes, where complexity often gets mistaken for progression.
When Should You Actually Progress An Exercise?
A client completing an exercise once does not automatically mean they are ready to progress.
You need to look at the purpose of the exercise.
Questions to ask include:
Can they perform it consistently?
Can they maintain control?
Is the current load still challenging?
What is their RPE?
How many reps in reserve do they have?
Are symptoms stable?
Are they recovering well?
Is the exercise still creating the intended stimulus?
If the client can complete ten repetitions but could easily complete another twenty, and the goal is strength, the exercise may be underloaded.
If the goal is motor learning, however, that might be completely fine.
Again, intent decides progression.
Progression Is Not Always Linear
Clients do not need to progress every session.
Some weeks, maintaining the current programme is appropriate.
Sometimes life stress, poor sleep, illness or increased activity outside the studio means the same exercise feels harder.
That does not mean the programme has failed.
Progress is not perfectly linear.
A good instructor can:
progress
maintain
regress
depending on what the client needs that day.
Regression Is Part Of Good Programming
A regression is not failure.
It is simply a change in demand.
You might regress an exercise because:
symptoms increased
fatigue is high
the movement is new
the client cannot maintain control
the load exceeds current capacity
This could involve:
reducing resistance
shortening range
adding support
shortening the lever
simplifying coordination
Then, as capacity improves, you progress again.
Regressions and progressions should be fluid.
Don’t Progress Everything At Once
This is another common mistake.
You increase load.
Increase range.
Remove support.
Add a prop.
Increase repetitions.
Add coordination.
Now you have changed five variables simultaneously.
If the client struggles, you have no idea which variable caused the problem.
Better programming often means changing one major variable at a time.
Then observe the response.
This makes progression more measurable.
Complexity Can Mask Weakness
A client may look “advanced” because they can perform complicated choreography.
But if you strip the movement back and ask them to produce meaningful force, you may discover significant strength limitations.
This is not unusual.
Pilates clients often become highly skilled at movement.
Skill and strength overlap, but they are not the same thing.
A sophisticated movement pattern does not guarantee a high level of force production.
This is why simple loaded exercises are incredibly valuable.
Advanced Does Not Mean Better
An advanced exercise is not automatically superior to a basic one.
A squat is basic.
So is a lunge.
So is a row.
So is a bridge.
These exercises can be progressed for years.
The goal is not to graduate clients out of foundational movements.
The goal is to make foundational movements appropriate for their current level.
A strong client may need a very difficult squat.
They may not need a completely different exercise.
The Client’s Goal Should Drive The Progression
Imagine three clients performing the same lunge.
Client A Wants To Build Strength
Progress resistance and range.
Client B Is Returning From A Knee Injury
Progress load tolerance gradually while monitoring symptoms.
Client C Wants Better Balance
Reduce support or manipulate base of support.
Same exercise.
Different progression.
This is why programming should never be separated from goals.
Class Planning Becomes Easier When You Think This Way
Once you understand progression variables, class planning becomes less dependent on constantly inventing new exercises.
You don’t need 40 new movements every week.
You can use the same foundational patterns and change the training stimulus.
For example:
Week 1: bilateral squat, moderate range
Week 2: increase resistance
Week 3: increase range
Week 4: slower eccentric
Week 5: unilateral variation
Now the client has actually progressed.
You haven’t just entertained them with new choreography.
Why This Matters For Client Confidence
Constantly changing exercises can also make clients feel like beginners forever.
They never get enough exposure to one movement to develop mastery.
Repeating and progressing familiar exercises allows clients to notice:
increased strength
better control
more range
greater load
improved endurance
That creates visible progress.
It also builds confidence.
Variation is useful.
But progression requires repetition.
How To Know If Your Progression Worked
After changing an exercise, ask:
Did the client maintain quality?
Was the intended muscle group sufficiently challenged?
Did symptoms remain acceptable?
Was the RPE appropriate?
Could they recover between sets?
Did the change move them closer to the goal?
If yes, the progression likely made sense.
If not, adjust.
Good programming is iterative.
Professional Reflection
Pilates instructors often feel pressure to constantly create.
New exercises.
New flows.
New layers.
New choreography.
But better programming does not necessarily require more creativity.
Sometimes it requires more discipline.
Take one good movement.
Understand its purpose.
Manipulate one variable.
Observe the client.
Progress again when appropriate.
That is far more sophisticated than simply adding another layer because the client
completed the previous one.
