Muscle Activation vs Muscle Strength: Why “Feeling It” Is Not The Same As Training It
“I can’t feel my glutes.”
Pilates instructors hear this constantly.
The client is doing bridges, side-lying leg work, scooter, lunges or squats.
You have cued the pelvis.
Changed the foot position.
Asked them to squeeze harder.
Told them to imagine pushing the floor away.
They still say:
“I just can’t feel it.”
At that point, many instructors assume the muscle is not activating.
But “not feeling” a muscle does not necessarily mean it is not working.
Likewise, a strong burning sensation does not necessarily mean the muscle is being trained effectively.
This is one of the most important distinctions instructors can learn.
Muscle activation, muscle sensation and muscle strength are not the same thing.
And if we confuse them, we can spend far too much class time chasing sensation instead of creating meaningful training stimulus.

What Do We Actually Mean By “Muscle Activation”?
The term muscle activation is used loosely in Pilates.
Sometimes instructors mean:
can the client recruit the muscle?
can the client consciously feel it?
can the client isolate it?
can the client create visible movement?
can the client maintain control?
Those are related concepts, but they are not identical.
From a physiological perspective, activation refers to the nervous system recruiting motor units within a muscle.
A muscle can be active even if the client does not consciously feel a strong contraction.
That is important.
The nervous system does not require the client to feel a burn before it can recruit a muscle.
What Is Muscle Strength?
Muscle strength refers to the ability of a muscle or group of muscles to produce force.
That is different from simply being able to activate a muscle.
You can activate a muscle at very low levels of force.
You can also activate it at much higher levels when resistance increases.
For strength adaptation, the issue is not simply whether the muscle is “on”.
It is whether the muscle is being challenged enough to adapt.
Feeling A Muscle Is Not The Same As Training It
A client can feel a muscle intensely during an exercise because of:
local fatigue
metabolite accumulation
unfamiliarity
prolonged time under tension
isometric holding
high repetition volume
That sensation can be useful.
It gives the client feedback.
But it does not tell you the full story.
An exercise can create an enormous burn while using relatively little external resistance.
Another exercise can produce very little local burning sensation while placing a much
greater force demand through the muscle.
Both may be useful.
They simply create different training stimuli.
Why Pilates Instructors Chase Sensation
Pilates culture often rewards sensation.
Clients say:
“I really felt that.”
“That burned.”
“My glutes were on fire.”
Instructors understandably take that as a sign the exercise worked.
But sensation is a poor standalone outcome measure.
If a client’s goal is strength, we need to consider:
load
repetitions
range
tempo
fatigue
proximity to failure
progression over time
not just whether the exercise burned.
The Glutes Are The Classic Example
Glutes are probably the most over-discussed muscles in Pilates.
Clients are told:
their glutes are asleep
their glutes are not firing
their hamstrings are taking over
their hip flexors are dominant
they need more activation drills
Sometimes low-load activation work is useful.
But the explanation can become oversimplified very quickly.
The gluteal muscles do not simply switch off because someone sits at a desk.
If a client can:
walk
climb stairs
stand up
extend the hip
their glutes are contributing.
The better question is:
Are the glutes producing enough force for the task?
That is a strength and programming question.
Why “Squeeze Harder” Is Not Always Good Coaching
When a client says they cannot feel their glutes, instructors often respond:
“Squeeze harder.”
But muscle recruitment is influenced by:
joint position
load
range
leverage
foot pressure
pelvis position
fatigue
exercise selection
Conscious contraction is only one piece.
Sometimes the exercise setup simply does not create a strong glute demand.
In that case, cueing harder may not solve anything.
Joint Position Changes Muscular Demand
Muscles produce force differently depending on joint position.
Take hip extension.
The contribution of the gluteus maximus and hamstrings changes according to:
hip angle
knee angle
pelvic position
lever length
load
This is why two hip-extension exercises can feel completely different even though both technically involve the same joint action.
A bridge with the knees highly flexed creates a different mechanical environment from a long-lever bridge.
A standing lunge creates a different demand again.
This is biomechanics.
And it is far more useful than simply telling the client to squeeze harder.
Example: Bridge
A client performs a bridge and says:
“I only feel my hamstrings.”
Possible reasons include:
foot position
knee angle
range
resistance
pelvis position
hamstring fatigue
exercise setup
You could keep cueing “glutes”.
Or you could change the mechanics.
Try:
moving the feet
reducing range
changing resistance
altering tempo
changing the bridge variation
Then reassess.
If the sensation changes, you have learned something about the exercise setup.
Example: Side-Lying Hip Abduction
A client performs side-lying hip abduction and feels:
front of hip
TFL
quadriceps
nowhere near the glutes
Again, do not immediately assume the glute medius is inactive.
Look at:
hip position
amount of flexion
pelvic rotation
range
load
leg height
Small changes can significantly alter the mechanical demand.
Sometimes the client is simply lifting far beyond the range they can control.
Example: Scooter
Scooter is often taught as a glute exercise.
But whether the client actually gets a meaningful glute stimulus depends on:
spring resistance
stance
trunk angle
hip position
range
tempo
A very light spring and tiny range may create lots of sensation but little meaningful force.
A heavier spring may create a much greater strength demand.
Again, the exercise name does not guarantee the stimulus.
Example: Squats And Lunges
Clients sometimes say:
“I don’t feel my glutes during squats.”
That does not automatically mean the squat is ineffective.
Squats distribute load across:
hips
knees
ankles
trunk
You may not feel one isolated muscle strongly.
That can still be a perfectly effective lower-body strength exercise.
Compound movements are not supposed to feel like isolation exercises.
Mind-Muscle Connection: Useful, But Not Everything
The mind-muscle connection refers to consciously focusing attention on a target muscle during movement.
This can sometimes increase awareness and alter recruitment.
It may be useful for:
motor learning
body awareness
low-load control
teaching new exercises
But it is not the only pathway to adaptation.
A client does not need to consciously feel every muscle to get stronger.
If they did, walking would be impossible.
You do not spend every step consciously activating:
glutes
calves
quadriceps
hamstrings
The nervous system coordinates movement automatically.
Muscle Recruitment And Force Production Are Different
A muscle can be active without producing high force.
That distinction matters.
For example:
A glute may be active during a low-load bridge.
But if the resistance is minimal, the strength stimulus may also be minimal.
Activation answers:
Is the muscle contributing?
Strength programming asks:
Is the muscle contributing enough force, against enough resistance, to create adaptation?
Those are different questions.
EMG Is Not A Strength Test
Pilates instructors occasionally reference EMG studies to justify one exercise over another.
EMG, or electromyography, measures electrical activity associated with muscle activation.
This can provide useful research information.
But high EMG does not automatically mean:
the exercise is best
the muscle will become stronger
the exercise creates more hypertrophy
the movement is clinically superior
Muscle activation is only one part of the picture.
Training adaptation depends on factors including:
load
volume
intensity
progression
recovery
So be cautious with claims such as:
“This exercise activates the glutes 30% more, therefore it is better.”
Better for what?
The Burn Does Not Equal Effectiveness
A burning sensation often appears during:
high-repetition work
long isometric holds
pulses
low-load fatigue
This can create a strong subjective sense of effort.
But if your goal is strength, you still need to ask:
How much force is the muscle actually being asked to produce?
A set of 40 tiny pulses may burn.
A heavy set of eight split squats may not create the same local burn.
But the split squats may produce a much greater strength stimulus.
Soreness Is Not Proof Of A Good Session Either
Delayed-onset muscle soreness can happen after:
unfamiliar exercise
higher volume
new range
eccentric work
But soreness is not a reliable measure of training quality.
A client can become stronger without feeling sore after every session.
Likewise, a client can feel extremely sore after a poorly programmed session.
Your goal should not be to make people sore.
Your goal should be adaptation.
What About “Inactive” Muscles?
This language should be used carefully.
In some neurological or clinical conditions, muscle activation can genuinely be impaired.
But in everyday Pilates language, phrases such as:
“Your glutes are switched off”
are often used far too casually.
For most healthy clients, a muscle is not literally inactive.
It may be:
weak
poorly coordinated
underloaded
contributing less than another muscle
difficult for the client to sense
Those descriptions are usually more accurate and less fear-inducing.
Why Labeling A Muscle As “Off” Can Be Unhelpful
Imagine telling a client:
“Your glutes don’t work.”
They may start believing:
their body is dysfunctional
they cannot squat safely
they need endless activation before every workout
That can create unnecessary dependency and fear.
A better explanation might be:
“Your current hip strength can improve, and we are going to progressively train it.”
That is both more useful and more accurate.
When Activation Drills Are Actually Useful
Activation drills do have a place.
They can be helpful when:
teaching a client where a muscle is
introducing a new movement
improving body awareness
preparing for a more complex task
rebuilding low-load control
For example:
A low-load side-lying glute exercise before a standing lunge may help a beginner understand hip movement.
That is useful.
The issue is when the activation drill becomes the entire programme.
Activation Is Not The End Goal
If a client has spent six months doing:
clams
tiny bridges
band walks
side-lying leg lifts
and their goal is to become stronger, eventually the programme needs to progress.
They may need:
heavier resistance
loaded squats
lunges
step-ups
unilateral work
hip hinges
The nervous system needs activation.
The musculoskeletal system also needs load.
“Activate First” Can Become Pre-Fatigue
Another common programming mistake is doing so much activation work before the main strength exercise that the target muscle is already exhausted.
For example:
30 clams
30 side-lying lifts
pulses
holds
band walks
then:
heavy lunges.
At this point, the glutes are not activated.
They are fatigued.
If your main goal is strength in the lunge, that fatigue may reduce how much load the client can tolerate.
Use activation work with purpose.
How Much Activation Is Enough?
There is no universal number.
But if the goal is awareness or preparation, the dose does not need to create maximum fatigue.
You may only need:
a few controlled repetitions
one brief set
low-load rehearsal
Then move into the main work.
Activation should support the programme.
Not dominate it.
Load Changes Recruitment
As exercise intensity increases, the nervous system recruits more motor units to meet the force demand.
This is one reason progressively increasing load can change the muscular stimulus more effectively than simply adding more verbal cueing.
If the target muscle is under-challenged, the answer may be:
more appropriate resistance.
Not another analogy.
But More Load Is Not Always Better
The load still needs to match the client.
If resistance becomes too high, you may see:
altered technique
reduced range
compensatory movement
pain
inability to control the exercise
The goal is not to add load blindly.
It is to choose enough resistance to create the intended stimulus while maintaining appropriate performance.
Muscle Sensation Changes With Fatigue
A client may not feel a muscle strongly during the first few repetitions.
Then sensation increases later in the set.
That does not mean the muscle only started working at repetition eight.
It may simply mean local fatigue and metabolite accumulation increased enough for the client to notice it.
This is another reason sensation should not be interpreted literally.
Why Some Strong Clients “Feel Less”
Experienced clients sometimes report less burning or soreness than beginners.
That does not necessarily mean their workout was ineffective.
They may simply be:
more accustomed to training
better at tolerating effort
using higher load with fewer repetitions
less influenced by novelty
Training effectiveness cannot be judged exclusively by sensation.
Why Beginners Often “Feel Everything”
New clients frequently experience intense local sensations during relatively simple exercise.
They may lack:
endurance
familiarity
movement efficiency
This can make low-load work feel very challenging.
Over time, the same exercise becomes easier.
That is adaptation.
At that point, the programme should progress.
Shoulder “Activation” Has The Same Problem
This issue is not exclusive to glutes.
Shoulder programmes often include endless:
band external rotation
scapular setting
low-load retraction
“shoulders down” drills
These can be useful early.
But eventually, shoulders need to tolerate meaningful:
pushing
pulling
overhead work
weight-bearing
if those movements are relevant to the client.
Again:
activation is a starting tool.
Not a permanent destination.
Core Activation Is Another Classic Example
“Engage your core.”
“Switch on your deep abdominals.”
These cues are everywhere in Pilates.
There may be contexts where improving trunk awareness is useful.
But your trunk is already active during:
walking
lifting
squatting
breathing
carrying
The question is not simply whether the core is “on”.
The question is whether the trunk can produce and tolerate the forces required for the
task.
That becomes a strength and load-management issue.
You Cannot “Activate” Your Way Out Of Insufficient Strength
This is perhaps the key teaching point.
If a client lacks the strength to perform a task, they eventually need to become stronger.
More activation drills cannot replace progressive resistance forever.
You can teach awareness.
You can improve motor control.
Then you have to load.
How To Tell Whether The Client Needs Motor Learning Or Strength
Ask:
Can they perform the movement at low load?
If not, they may need:
clearer instruction
simpler setup
motor-learning practice
If yes, but performance deteriorates as load increases, the issue may be more about capacity.
That suggests:
progressive strength work
endurance
appropriate loading
This distinction saves instructors from endlessly cueing a strength problem.
Better Coaching Questions
Instead of immediately asking:
“Can you feel your glutes?”
try:
Can you control the movement?
Is anything painful?
Where does technique change?
How many more repetitions could you perform?
Does changing load alter the movement?
Does changing range help?
Is this exercise actually targeting the intended function?
Is the client getting stronger over time?
These questions give you more useful programming information.
A Practical Decision Framework: “I Can’t Feel The Target Muscle”
When a client says:
“I can’t feel it.”
work through the following.
1. Is The Exercise Mechanically Appropriate?
Does the movement actually load the target muscle meaningfully?
If not, change the exercise.
2. Is The Client Performing The Intended Movement?
If not, cue or simplify.
3. Is The Client In Pain?
If yes, assess or modify appropriately.
4. Is The Load Meaningful?
If the exercise is extremely easy, progress resistance.
5. Does Changing Joint Position Change The Demand?
Adjust:
stance
range
lever
body position
and reassess.
6. Is The Goal Awareness Or Strength?
If awareness, sensation may matter more.
If strength, load and progression matter more.
7. Is The Client Actually Improving?
Track:
resistance
repetitions
control
function
rather than chasing sensation alone.
Practical Example: Glute Bridge
Goal:
Glute strength.
Client:
Does not feel glutes.
Possible approach:
Check foot position.
Check range.
Change resistance.
Reduce hamstring-dominant setup if relevant.
Ask whether the movement is comfortable.
Progress the bridge rather than endlessly repeating the easiest version.
If the client can perform:
heavier bridge
increased range
unilateral progression
over time, strength has improved whether or not every repetition created a dramatic burn.
Practical Example: Reformer Scooter
Goal:
Hip extension strength.
Instead of judging effectiveness by:
“Can you feel your glute?”
also consider:
spring load
hip range
stance
tempo
fatigue
ability to progress resistance
If the client can gradually tolerate more meaningful resistance while maintaining the intended movement, that is useful progress.
Practical Example: Side-Lying Glute Work
Goal:
Improve lateral hip strength.
If the client feels only the front of the hip:
adjust leg position
reduce excessive hip flexion
check pelvic rotation
reduce range
adjust load
Then reassess.
But do not spend the entire class desperately searching for a perfect burning sensation.
Practical Example: Abdominal Work
A client says:
“I only feel my hip flexors.”
First ask:
Is the exercise actually using hip flexion?
If yes, the hip flexors are expected to work.
Then assess:
trunk control
range
lever length
load
You do not need to eliminate all hip-flexor sensation for the abdominal exercise to be effective.
Strength Requires Progression
If your programme is designed to create strength, you should be able to identify progress over time.
That may include:
more resistance
better range
greater load
more difficult leverage
better unilateral control
higher force production
If the client has been doing the exact same activation drill for a year, ask what adaptation is still being created.
Track Performance, Not Just Sensation
Useful performance measures might include:
spring settings
external weight
repetitions
sets
range
RPE
reps in reserve
functional ability
This creates objective evidence of progress.
“Felt my glutes more today” can still be useful information.
It should not be the only marker.
Why This Matters For Client Confidence
Language matters.
Telling someone:
“Your glutes are asleep”
can make their body sound broken.
Telling them:
“We are going to build more hip strength and improve how you use that strength in movement”
is far more empowering.
We want clients to leave Pilates with greater confidence in their bodies.
Not a longer list of muscles they believe are dysfunctional.
Professional Reflection
Pilates instructors are excellent at helping clients develop body awareness.
That is one of the strengths of the method.
But awareness should not become obsession with sensation.
A client does not need to consciously feel every muscle to move well.
And a muscle does not need to burn to become stronger.
Good programming asks:
What is the goal?
What is the mechanical demand?
Is the load sufficient?
Can the client control it?
Is the programme progressing?
Those questions take us beyond activation.
They take us into actual exercise prescription.

“What should my client feel?”
can be useful.
But it should never replace:
“What is this exercise actually asking the body to do?”
Understanding muscle function requires more than memorising:
origins
insertions
textbook actions
It requires understanding how:
joint position
load
leverage
range
body position
change the demand placed on muscle.
