The Science of Motor Learning: Why Clients Don't Learn the Way You Think They Do

One of the biggest misconceptions in Pilates education is that if a client performs an exercise well during class, they've learnt it.

In reality, performing a movement well and learning a movement are two very different things.


A client may complete a beautiful bridge while you're standing beside them, providing constant corrections, demonstrations and encouragement. Then they return a week later and it feels as though they've never done the exercise before.


It's frustrating for instructors, but it's completely normal.


Why?


Because learning isn't about what happens during the session.


It's about what the client is able to retain and reproduce afterwards.


This is the science of motor learning, and it's one of the most valuable yet underappreciated topics every Pilates instructor should understand.


Motor learning influences everything we do:

  • How we cue.

  • How we correct.

  • How we structure classes.

  • How often we give feedback.

  • How quickly clients become independent movers.


Understanding these principles doesn't just improve teaching.


It changes the way clients experience movement for years to come.


What Is Motor Learning?


Motor learning is the process through which the nervous system develops, refines and retains movement skills.


Unlike simply performing an exercise once, motor learning creates relatively permanent changes in how movement is controlled.


The emphasis is on the word permanent.


A client who needs constant instruction every repetition has not yet fully learnt the movement.


A client who can return several weeks later and perform it confidently without prompting has.


As Pilates instructors, our goal isn't simply to get clients through today's class.


Our goal is to help them become increasingly independent movers.


Performance Is Not the Same as Learning

One of the biggest traps instructors fall into is judging learning by immediate performance.


Imagine a client performing Footwork on the Reformer.


You provide continuous cueing:


"Neutral pelvis."


"Relax your shoulders."


"Don't grip your toes."


"Slow the carriage."


"Keep breathing."


The client performs beautifully.


The class ends feeling successful.


But when they return next week, the same corrections are needed.


Did learning occur?


Perhaps.


But probably not to the degree we hoped.


Temporary performance improvements often occur because the instructor is effectively controlling the movement.


True learning only becomes apparent when the instructor steps back.


Why Over-Cueing Creates Dependency


Many instructors believe more cueing equals better teaching.


Research suggests otherwise.


When clients receive continuous corrections throughout every repetition, something interesting happens.


They begin relying on the instructor instead of developing their own movement awareness.


The instructor becomes part of the exercise.


Without realising it, we've created dependency.


Clients stop asking themselves:


"What does this feel like?"


Instead they wait for us to tell them.


Over time this reduces autonomy and slows motor learning.


This doesn't mean we stop cueing.


It means we become more intentional about when and how we provide feedback.


Intrinsic vs Extrinsic Feedback

Motor learning research divides feedback into two broad categories.


Intrinsic Feedback

Intrinsic feedback comes from the client themselves.


It includes information gathered through:

  • proprioception

  • pressure

  • balance

  • muscle tension

  • breathing

  • visual awareness


For example:

"I felt my weight shift to my left leg."


"My shoulders felt more relaxed."


"I lost my balance."


This internal information is incredibly valuable because it helps clients build body awareness.


Extrinsic Feedback

Extrinsic feedback comes from an external source.


Usually this is the instructor.


Examples include:

"Keep your pelvis level."


"Your ribs are lifting."


"Try slowing the return."


Extrinsic feedback is essential, particularly when learning a new skill.


However, too much external feedback can reduce the client's ability to interpret their own internal information.


The goal is gradually shifting responsibility from instructor to client.


Asking Better Questions

Instead of immediately correcting everything you see, try asking questions.


For example:

"What did you notice during that repetition?"


"Did one side feel different?"


"Where did you feel most stable?"


"What happened when you slowed the movement?"


Questions encourage intrinsic feedback.


Clients begin analysing their own movement instead of relying entirely on yours.


Blocked Practice vs Random Practice

One of the most fascinating areas of motor learning is how practice is organised.


Blocked Practice

Blocked practice involves repeating the same movement over and over before progressing.


For example:

Eight repetitions of Footwork.


Then eight bridges.


Then eight lunges.


Blocked practice often produces excellent short-term performance.


Clients appear confident quickly.


But retention isn't always strong.


Random Practice

Random practice mixes different movement challenges together.


For example:

Footwork.


Then bridging.


Back to Footwork.


Then standing balance.


Then Footwork again.


Initially this feels harder.


Clients make more mistakes.


Performance often appears worse.


Interestingly, research consistently shows random practice produces better long-term retention.


Why?


Because the nervous system must continually solve new movement problems rather than simply repeating the same solution.


This creates deeper learning.


Mistakes Are Part of Learning

Many instructors instinctively try to prevent mistakes.


But motor learning research tells us something surprising.


Appropriate mistakes actually improve learning.


When clients experience small movement errors, they receive valuable information

about what works and what doesn't.


Constantly preventing every error can slow skill development.


Our role isn't eliminating mistakes.


It's creating an environment where clients can safely learn from them.



Bandwidth Feedback

One of the most practical concepts instructors can apply immediately is bandwidth feedback.


Bandwidth feedback means allowing small errors to occur before intervening.


Imagine a client whose pelvis rotates one or two degrees during bridging.


Do they need correction?


Probably not.


Now imagine their pelvis rotates significantly and they're no longer achieving the purpose of the exercise.


Now feedback becomes valuable.


This approach prevents instructors from correcting every tiny imperfection.


Instead, feedback is reserved for errors that genuinely affect movement quality or safety.


Clients become less dependent and more confident solving movement problems

themselves.


External Focus vs Internal Focus

Another major finding from motor learning research involves attentional focus.


Internal Focus

Internal cues direct attention towards body parts.


Examples include:

"Squeeze your glutes."


"Engage your core."


"Lift your ribs."


Internal cueing certainly has a place, particularly when introducing unfamiliar concepts.


However, relying exclusively on internal cues may reduce movement efficiency.


External Focus

External cues direct attention towards the outcome of the movement.


Examples include:

"Push the carriage away."


"Reach through your heels."


"Grow taller towards the ceiling."


"Press the floor away."


Research consistently shows external focus often produces:

  • smoother movement

  • greater force production

  • improved coordination

  • better retention

  • faster skill acquisition


This doesn't mean internal cues disappear.


It simply means external cues should probably be used far more often than many instructors currently do.


Less Feedback Can Produce Better Learning

This idea initially feels uncomfortable.


As instructors, we naturally want to help.


But sometimes the most valuable thing we can do is pause.


Observe.


Allow another repetition.


Give clients time to process.


Silence creates opportunity for learning.


Constant talking does not.


Experienced instructors often appear calmer because they understand this.


They don't correct everything.


They correct what matters.


What Does This Look Like in a Pilates Class?

Imagine teaching Scooter.


Rather than providing ten cues during every repetition, you might:


Demonstrate the exercise.


Provide two key cues.


Allow several repetitions.


Observe carefully.


Offer one meaningful adjustment.


Then ask:

"How did that change feel?"


The client now participates in the learning process rather than simply following

instructions.


Why This Matters for Long-Term Client Outcomes

Clients who become independent movers achieve better long-term results.


They develop:

  • greater body awareness

  • improved confidence

  • better movement adaptability

  • stronger retention between classes

  • reduced reliance on instructor feedback
