Why Strength Training Becomes More Important As You Get Older, Even If You Already Walk Every Day

“I walk every day. Isn’t that enough?”


It’s a question we hear regularly, particularly from people who are already active.


They walk the dog every morning. They easily reach their daily steps. They might swim, play golf, garden, travel and generally spend far less time sitting than many people half their age.


And all of that is excellent.


Walking is excellent for health, but progressive resistance training provides an additional stimulus that helps maintain muscle and physical capacity as we age.

Walking is one of the simplest and most accessible forms of physical activity we have. It supports cardiovascular health, maintains general activity levels, gets us outside and can have enormous benefits for both physical and mental wellbeing.


Please don’t stop walking.


But walking and strength training don’t provide exactly the same stimulus to the body.


As we get older, maintaining muscle, strength, power, balance and bone health becomes increasingly important. Walking contributes to some of these qualities, but for most people it doesn’t provide enough resistance to maintain all of them by itself.


This doesn’t mean you suddenly need to become a bodybuilder at 60, 70 or 80.


It means your muscles need to regularly experience enough resistance to have a reason to remain strong.


And the older we get, the more valuable that strength becomes.


What Happens To Muscle As We Age?

Our muscles don’t remain exactly the same throughout life.


As we get older, we tend to experience gradual changes in both muscle mass and muscle strength, particularly if we aren’t regularly performing resistance exercise.


Age-related loss of muscle mass is often referred to as sarcopenia.


But it’s important not to interpret this as:

“I’m getting older, so becoming weak is inevitable.”


Ageing influences muscle.


So does training.


Muscle remains adaptable throughout life, which means appropriately prescribed

resistance exercise can help older adults improve strength and physical function.


The goal isn’t to pretend ageing doesn’t happen.


The goal is to influence the parts of ageing that are trainable.


Strength is absolutely one of them.


Being Active And Being Strong Aren’t The Same Thing

Someone can be very active without necessarily having high levels of strength.


Imagine someone who walks for an hour every morning.


They have excellent walking endurance.


But ask them to:

  • carry two heavy shopping bags

  • lift a suitcase into the car

  • stand from a very low chair

  • get off the floor

  • climb a steep flight of stairs

  • move a heavy pot in the garden

and they may struggle.


Why?


Because these tasks require the body to produce more force than normal walking requires.


Your body adapts specifically to the demands you regularly place on it.


Walking makes you better prepared for walking.


Strength training prepares you for tasks that require greater force.


Ideally, healthy ageing includes both.


Why Walking Alone May Not Be Enough

Walking involves repeated muscular contractions and it certainly isn’t “doing nothing”.


For someone who has been extremely inactive, beginning a regular walking programme

can provide a meaningful physical challenge.


But as the body adapts, normal walking generally doesn’t create the same resistance stimulus as progressively loaded strength exercise.


Think about your legs during your usual walk.


They are moving your body weight thousands of times, but probably not approaching the limits of what your muscles can produce.


Now compare that with:

  • a challenging squat

  • a loaded step-up

  • a split squat

  • a heavy calf raise

  • pushing against substantial Reformer resistance

  • lifting a weight from the floor


The muscular demand is different.


If we want to preserve and improve strength, we need to deliberately train it.


Why Strength Matters For Everyday Life

We don’t strength train simply so we can become better at strength training.


We do it because strength gives us options.


Strength helps you:

  • get out of a chair

  • climb stairs

  • carry groceries

  • lift luggage

  • garden

  • play with grandchildren

  • get on and off the floor

  • participate in sport

  • manage hills

  • travel independently

  • maintain balance

  • continue doing physically demanding hobbies


Many of these activities don’t feel like “exercise”.


They’re simply life.


The more physical capacity you maintain, the easier everyday tasks tend to feel relative to what your body is capable of doing.


Think About Strength As Physical Reserve

Imagine two people both need a certain amount of leg strength to stand from a low chair.


For Person A, that task requires almost all of their available strength.


For Person B, it requires only a fraction.


Both can technically stand up.


But Person B has significantly more reserve capacity.


Now add:

  • fatigue

  • illness

  • an injury

  • a hospital stay

  • a period of reduced activity


The person who began with greater physical reserve has more capacity available before ordinary tasks become difficult.


This is one reason building strength before you desperately need it is so valuable.


You aren’t only training for what you need your body to do today.


You’re creating physical reserve for the future.


Strength Training Helps Maintain Independence

One of the most meaningful goals of exercise as we age is maintaining the ability to do things independently.


That includes obvious activities such as walking and climbing stairs, but also tasks we often take for granted:

  • carrying washing

  • moving furniture

  • opening heavy doors

  • lifting objects overhead

  • getting up after sitting on the floor

  • putting luggage into an overhead compartment

  • carrying shopping from the car

  • managing steps without assistance


These tasks require combinations of strength, balance, coordination and mobility.


A good exercise programme should help preserve all of them.


Lower-Body Strength Becomes Particularly Important

Your legs are responsible for an enormous amount of everyday function.


The quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings and calves help you:

  • stand

  • walk

  • climb

  • descend stairs

  • squat

  • recover your balance

  • get off the floor


If lower-body strength gradually decreases, people often begin compensating without realising it.


They push heavily through their hands to get out of chairs.


They avoid stairs.


They choose higher seats.


They stop sitting on the floor.


They use momentum to stand.


These strategies aren’t inherently bad.


But a noticeable change in how much assistance you require can be a sign that maintaining or rebuilding lower-body strength would be beneficial.


Upper-Body Strength Matters Too

Healthy-ageing programmes can become extremely lower-body focused.


But upper-body strength is also important.


You need it to:

  • carry

  • pull

  • push

  • lift

  • reach

  • support your body weight

  • perform household tasks


This is particularly relevant for people who walk extensively but perform very little resistance exercise.


Walking provides minimal challenge to many upper-body muscles.


A complete programme should therefore include both upper- and lower-body strengthening.


Strength Training And Bone Health

Muscle isn’t the only tissue that responds to load.


Bone does too.


Bone is living tissue that adapts to the forces placed upon it.


As we age, particularly for women during and after menopause maintaining bone health becomes increasingly important.


Weight-bearing activity such as walking can contribute positively to bone health, but resistance training allows us to expose the skeleton to greater and more varied forces.


Depending on the individual, an exercise programme for bone health may incorporate:

  • resistance training

  • weight-bearing exercise

  • appropriately prescribed impact

  • balance work

  • progressive loading


For people with diagnosed osteoporosis, osteopenia, previous fractures or other medical considerations, exercise selection should be individualised appropriately.


But the broader principle remains:

Our bones, like our muscles, need load.


What About Pilates For Bone Health?

Pilates can play an important role, particularly when it incorporates sufficient resistance.


Equipment-based Pilates gives us the ability to challenge:

  • legs

  • hips

  • trunk

  • upper body

  • balance

  • coordination


But not every Pilates exercise provides the same bone-loading stimulus.


This is one reason we don’t believe healthy-ageing exercise should be restricted to very gentle Pilates indefinitely.

The goal isn’t to choose between Pilates and strength training.


It’s to use the right tools for the outcome we want.


Strength And Balance Are Closely Connected

People often think of balance as something separate from strength.


In reality, the two interact constantly.


When you lose your balance, your muscles need to generate force quickly enough to recover.


If you trip, your leg needs to catch you.


If you step onto an uneven surface, the muscles around the hip, knee and ankle need to respond.


If you’re standing on one leg, your lower-limb and trunk muscles need sufficient capacity to maintain the position.


Balance training matters.


So does having enough strength to act on the information your balance system provides.


We Also Lose Power As We Age

Strength is your ability to produce force.


Power is your ability to produce force quickly.


That distinction matters.


Standing slowly from a chair requires strength.


Stopping yourself from falling after you trip requires force to be generated much more rapidly.


Many everyday situations require power:

  • recovering from a stumble

  • stepping quickly onto a curb

  • moving out of the way

  • catching yourself

  • climbing stairs at speed


This is why an ideal healthy-ageing programme isn’t necessarily composed entirely of slow, gentle exercise.


Where appropriate, we can also train movements with greater speed and intent.


The exact level depends on the individual.


“I’m 70. Is It Too Late To Start?”

No.


You don’t need decades of gym experience to benefit from strength training.


The starting point simply needs to match your current capacity.


For one person, that might mean:

  • sit-to-stands

  • supported squats

  • light resistance

  • basic Reformer work


For someone else in their seventies, it might mean:

  • loaded squats

  • deadlifts

  • split squats

  • challenging Reformer resistance

  • free weights

  • power exercises


Chronological age alone doesn’t tell us what someone is capable of.


Training history, health, injuries, confidence and current physical function matter enormously.


This is why exercise should be individualised rather than assuming everyone over a particular age needs the same “seniors programme”.


You Don’t Need To Lift Extremely Heavy Weights On Day One

The phrase strength training can be intimidating.


People sometimes picture barbells loaded with enormous weights or highly technical gym exercises.


That is one form of strength training.


It isn’t the only form.


Resistance can come from:

  • body weight

  • Pilates springs

  • dumbbells

  • resistance bands

  • cable machines

  • weight machines

  • kettlebells


The equipment matters less than whether the exercise provides an appropriate challenge.


You start where you are.


Then you progress.


What Does “Progressive” Strength Training Mean?

This part is important.


If you perform exactly the same exercise with exactly the same resistance forever, your body eventually adapts.


That’s a good thing.


But once the exercise becomes easy, the stimulus has changed.


Progressive strength training means gradually adjusting the programme as your capacity improves.


That might involve:

  • increasing resistance

  • adding weight

  • increasing range

  • progressing from two legs to one

  • changing leverage

  • increasing repetitions

  • adding another set

  • progressing to a more demanding exercise


You don’t need to progress everything every week.


But over time, your programme should evolve with you.


How Hard Should Strength Training Feel?

If the goal is improving strength, at least some exercises need to feel genuinely challenging.


That doesn’t mean painful.


It doesn’t mean unsafe.


And it doesn’t mean every session needs to leave you exhausted.


But if you finish an exercise and could easily have completed another 30 repetitions, it probably wasn’t providing a particularly high strength demand.


A useful question is:

“How many more good repetitions could I have done?”


If the answer is only a few, the resistance is likely providing a meaningful challenge.


If the answer is twenty, there may be room to progress.


This is something our instructors can help determine safely.


What If I Have Arthritis?

Having arthritis doesn’t automatically mean strength training is inappropriate.


In fact, strengthening is commonly an important component of managing osteoarthritis.


The programme may need modifications depending on:

  • symptoms

  • joint range

  • current strength

  • irritability

  • previous exercise experience


We can manipulate:

  • resistance

  • range

  • position

  • repetitions

  • exercise choice


The goal isn’t to avoid using the joint.

It’s to progressively build the capacity of the muscles around it while respecting

symptoms.


What If I Have Osteoporosis?

Resistance training can also be extremely valuable for people with reduced bone

density, but programming should consider the individual.


Someone with osteoporosis may benefit from a combination of:

  • progressive resistance training

  • weight-bearing exercise

  • balance work

  • appropriately selected impact activities


If there is a history of vertebral fracture, significant osteoporosis or other medical considerations, certain exercises may require modification.


This is where physiotherapy-led programming can be particularly valuable.


What If I’ve Had An Injury?

An injury history doesn’t automatically exclude you from strength training either.


In many cases, strength training becomes part of the rehabilitation.


The starting point may simply be different.


At Body Form, we can begin with a physiotherapy assessment where necessary and then gradually transition from rehabilitation towards more independent exercise as

capacity improves.


The goal isn’t to permanently protect the previously injured area.


It’s to rebuild it.


Why Pilates And Strength Training Work So Well Together

There is sometimes an unnecessary divide between Pilates and strength training.


We don’t see them as competing methods.


Pilates equipment gives us an enormous range of options for:

  • movement control

  • mobility

  • coordination

  • trunk strength

  • balance

  • supported resistance


Strength training allows us to progressively increase the demand as someone becomes stronger.


Together, they create a very adaptable system.


For someone new to exercise, Pilates equipment may provide an accessible starting point.


For someone already strong, we can introduce heavier resistance and free weights.


For someone returning from injury, we can move progressively between the two.


The programme changes according to the person.


Why Our Small Group Size Matters

One of the barriers people have with strength training is uncertainty.

“Am I doing this correctly?”

“Is this weight too heavy?”

“Should my knee be doing that?”

“Can I do this with my back?”


At Body Form, our group classes are capped at six clients.


This allows our instructors to actually watch what you’re doing, provide feedback and adjust exercises where necessary.


It also means two people standing next to each other don’t necessarily need to perform exactly the same exercise at exactly the same resistance.


Your programme should reflect your body.


Semi-Private Training For More Individualised Support

For clients who want more personalised programming, our semi-private sessions are capped at three.


Each person can work through an individual programme based on their goals, injuries and current capacity while being closely supervised by an instructor.


This can be particularly valuable for:

  • returning from injury

  • osteoporosis or osteopenia

  • significant strength deficits

  • balance concerns

  • complex health histories

  • returning to exercise after a long break

  • specific sporting goals


For clients requiring clinical assessment, we also offer individual physiotherapy.


How Much Strength Training Do I Need?

You don’t need to strength train every day.


Consistency matters more than trying to do everything at once.


For many adults, incorporating resistance training several times across the week alongside walking and other cardiovascular activity creates a much more complete

exercise routine than relying on one form of movement alone.


Your ideal amount will depend on:

  • your current exercise

  • health

  • goals

  • training history

  • recovery

  • other activities


If you’re currently doing nothing except walking, you don’t need to suddenly overhaul your entire week.


Start by adding a manageable amount of resistance training.


Then build from there.


Don’t Stop Walking

This entire article can be summarised without turning walking and strength training into competitors.


Walking is excellent.


Keep doing it.


Walk to the beach.


Walk the dog.


Walk with friends.


Walk while travelling.


Walk because you enjoy it.


But consider adding something walking doesn’t provide as effectively:

progressive resistance.


The combination is far more powerful than treating either as the only form of exercise you need.


Healthy Ageing Is About Maintaining Capacity

We often talk about exercise as a way to reduce the risk of disease.


That’s important.


But there is another reason to exercise that is much more tangible.


What do you want to still be able to do in ten, twenty or thirty years?


Travel independently?


Carry your own suitcase?


Surf?


Play golf?


Hike?


Garden?


Get onto the floor?


Play with grandchildren?


Climb stairs comfortably?


Keep living in your own home?


Strength training isn’t just about muscles.


It’s about maintaining the physical capacity that makes those things possible.
