Tempo In Pilates: Why How Fast Your Client Moves Can Completely Change The Exercise

Two clients can perform the exact same exercise.


Same springs.


Same range.


Same number of repetitions.


Same setup.


Yet one client finishes the set in 20 seconds and the other takes 60.


Have they completed the same training stimulus?


Not necessarily.


This is where tempo matters.


Tempo refers to the speed at which different phases of an exercise are performed.


Tempo changes muscular demand even when the spring setting and exercise remain exactly the same.

In Pilates, tempo is often treated as an aesthetic choice.


Slow and controlled.


Smooth.


Flowing.


But tempo is not just about making movement look polished.


It changes:

  • muscular demand

  • time under tension

  • momentum

  • fatigue

  • motor control

  • coordination

  • force production

  • exercise intensity


And because of that, tempo should be programmed intentionally.


The useful question is not:

"Should Pilates be slow?"


It is:

"What speed best matches the outcome I am trying to train?"


What Does Exercise Tempo Actually Mean?

Most strength exercises have three main phases:

  • concentric

  • eccentric

  • isometric


Understanding these phases makes tempo much easier to programme.


Concentric Phase

The concentric phase is when the working muscle shortens while producing force.


For example:

  • rising out of a squat

  • pressing the carriage away in footwork

  • lifting the hips into a bridge

  • pulling into a row


Eccentric Phase

The eccentric phase is when the muscle lengthens under load.


For example:

  • lowering into a squat

  • returning the carriage in footwork

  • lowering from a bridge

  • controlling the arms back after a row


Isometric Phase

The isometric phase is when the muscle produces force without obvious movement.


Examples include:

  • holding the top of a bridge

  • maintaining a plank

  • pausing at the bottom of a lunge

  • holding arms in position against spring resistance


You can manipulate the duration of any of these phases.


That is tempo training.


Why Tempo Changes The Exercise

A movement performed quickly and a movement performed slowly are not

mechanically identical from a training perspective.


Changing speed alters the amount of time the muscles spend producing force.


It can also change how much momentum contributes.


For example:

Imagine a client performing Reformer footwork.


Version 1:

Press out quickly. Allow the carriage to return quickly. Immediately press out again.


Version 2:

Press out with control. Take three seconds to return. Pause briefly at the bottom. Press out again.


Same springs.


Same number of repetitions.


Very different experience.


The second version creates significantly more time under tension.


What Is Time Under Tension?

Time under tension refers to how long a muscle is working during a set.


For example, 10 repetitions performed in 20 seconds creates less total working time than 10 repetitions performed in 50 seconds.


Increasing time under tension can increase muscular fatigue and make a given load feel significantly more challenging.



This is why slowing an exercise down can be useful.


But it is important not to confuse:

"This feels harder"


with


"This is automatically a better progression."


Tempo is one variable.


It is not the only one.


Slow Does Not Automatically Mean Better

Pilates instructors are often taught:

"Slower is harder."


Sometimes it is.


But slow is not universally superior.


A very slow exercise may increase control demands and time under tension.


That can be useful for:

  • motor learning

  • strength endurance

  • technique

  • awareness

  • early rehabilitation


But there are also times when moving faster is appropriate.


If your client needs:

  • power

  • athleticism

  • reactive ability

  • faster force production

then always moving slowly can leave an important gap.


Tempo should match the goal.


Why Pilates Has Traditionally Favoured Slower Movement

Controlled movement is central to many Pilates teaching styles.


Slower speeds can help clients:

  • learn new patterns

  • improve awareness

  • reduce reliance on momentum

  • coordinate breath

  • manage unfamiliar equipment

  • control spring resistance


This is particularly useful for beginners.


But over time, movement speed can and should vary depending on the client and objective.


Control should not mean artificially slow forever.


Momentum Is Not Always The Enemy

Pilates often treats momentum like a mistake.


But momentum is a normal part of human movement.


Walking involves momentum.


Running involves momentum.


Jumping involves momentum.


Sport involves momentum.


The issue is whether momentum is helping the intended task or replacing the muscular work you wanted.


For example:

If a client swings the body aggressively to complete a row because the resistance is too heavy, that may reduce the target demand.


But if the goal is developing speed or power, using momentum strategically may be completely appropriate.


Context matters.

Eccentric Tempo: Why The Lowering Phase Matters

Eccentric muscle contractions are extremely valuable for strength development.


In Pilates, the eccentric phase is often the part instructors rush through.


Take a lunge.


The client pushes the carriage out under control.


Then quickly returns to the starting position.


But the return phase may actually offer a great opportunity to load the muscles eccentrically.


You could instead cue:

"Take three counts to come back in."


Now the quadriceps and glutes have to control the return more deliberately.


Same exercise.


Very different demand.


Reformer Example: Lunge

Imagine a standing Reformer lunge.


You want to increase lower-body strength without changing springs.

Option 1:

Normal tempo.


Option 2:

Three seconds lowering.


Option 3:

Three seconds lowering plus a two-second pause at the bottom.


Option 4:

Slow lowering, then faster drive back up.


Each version changes the training stimulus.


You do not need a new exercise.


You changed the tempo.


Reformer Example: Footwork

Footwork is a perfect tempo exercise because the springs can pull the carriage back toward the stopper if the client does not control the return.


If the client allows the carriage to come in quickly, the springs may do a large part of the work.


Cueing a slower return can increase:

  • eccentric control

  • quadriceps demand

  • glute demand

  • time under tension


A simple cue might be:

"Press out in one count, return in three."


That gives the exercise immediate structure.


Reformer Example: Row

During a row, clients often focus on pulling the straps back.


But the return phase can be just as valuable.


If they quickly release the straps forward, they lose eccentric loading.


You could cue:

"Pull back, pause, then take three counts forward."


This helps train controlled shoulder and upper-back strength through the full range.


Bridge Example

A bridge gives you several tempo options.


You can manipulate:

  • the lift

  • the hold

  • the lowering phase


For example:

2 seconds up3-second hold4 seconds down


This dramatically increases time under tension without changing the exercise.


But remember, this progression is primarily increasing endurance and control.


If the client could easily tolerate additional resistance, loading may still be the more appropriate next step.


Plank Example

Planks are already largely isometric.


Tempo here becomes more about:

  • hold duration

  • breathing

  • transitions in and out

  • adding controlled limb movement


For example:

A 15-second plank and a 60-second plank are very different endurance demands.


But longer is not always better.


Once the client can maintain a plank for a long duration, adding endless time may not be the best progression.


You may instead change:

  • load

  • lever

  • support

  • dynamic movement


Again, tempo is just one variable.


Isometric Holds: Useful, But Not Magic

Isometric work can be extremely useful.


It can help:

  • improve positional control

  • increase tolerance

  • build strength in a specific range

  • improve confidence

  • increase time under tension


Examples include:

  • bridge holds

  • squat holds

  • split squat holds

  • side plank holds

  • arm holds against springs


But an isometric hold is not automatically superior to dynamic movement.


Use it because the goal benefits from it.


Not because "holds burn more".


Why The Burn Can Be Misleading

Clients often interpret burning as evidence that an exercise is working.


Instructors do too.


A very slow, high-repetition exercise can create a huge burn.


But burning does not tell you everything about the strength stimulus.


A client may feel significant local fatigue while still using very little external resistance.


This can improve muscular endurance.


It can also be useful for some strength goals.


But if your aim is maximising strength, simply creating more burn through slower tempo is not always enough.


Load still matters.


Tempo Does Not Replace Resistance Forever

This is one of the most important programming points.


Slowing an exercise down can make a light resistance feel harder.


That does not mean you never need to increase load.


If a client becomes stronger, the programme should eventually reflect that.


A common mistake is keeping springs very light and making everything slower and

longer instead of progressively increasing resistance.


That can lead to lots of fatigue without enough meaningful overload.


Tempo and load should work together.


Tempo And Strength Training

When the goal is strength, tempo can help improve control and increase challenge.


But excessively slow movement can sometimes reduce the amount of load a client can tolerate.


For example:

A client may be able to perform a heavier squat at a normal controlled tempo.


If you make the lowering phase extremely slow, they may need to reduce the weight significantly.


That is not necessarily bad.


But it changes the stimulus.


So decide what matters more in that session:

  • load?

  • control?

  • endurance?

  • positional strength?


Tempo And Motor Learning

Slower movement can be incredibly useful when someone is learning a new exercise.


It gives the nervous system more time to process:

  • position

  • direction

  • balance

  • sequencing

  • breath


This can be particularly helpful with:

  • new Reformer setups

  • unfamiliar standing work

  • complex coordination

  • clients lacking confidence


Once the movement is familiar, you may no longer need the same slow pace.


Tempo And Injury Rehabilitation

Tempo can be useful during rehabilitation because it allows precise control over movement exposure.


For example:

A client with knee pain might initially tolerate a slow, controlled squat better than fast repetitions.


A shoulder client may benefit from slow eccentric loading.


A tendon rehabilitation programme may deliberately include slower loading phases.


But again, the appropriate tempo depends on:

  • symptoms

  • tissue

  • stage of rehabilitation

  • load tolerance


Slow is a tool.


Not a universal rehabilitation rule.


Tempo And Tendon Loading

Tendon rehabilitation often uses slower resistance work because it allows controlled exposure to load.


For example:

  • slow calf raises

  • slow knee extension

  • controlled shoulder loading


This can be valuable for increasing load tolerance.


But tendons also need to tolerate faster force production if the client is returning to:

  • running

  • jumping

  • sport


Eventually, programming may need to progress beyond slow work.


Tempo And Healthy Ageing

This is an area where Pilates instructors need to think beyond slow control.


Older adults need:

  • strength

  • balance

  • mobility


But they also benefit from maintaining the ability to produce force quickly.


If someone trips, they do not get five seconds to recover.


They need to react.


This is why power becomes important.


Where appropriate, programming may eventually include:

  • faster sit-to-stands

  • quicker step-ups

  • faster concentric intent

  • controlled but purposeful speed


The client still needs control.


But control does not mean slow.


Tempo And Sport

Athletes also need speed.


A runner needs rapid force production.


A tennis player needs acceleration and rotation.


A footballer needs explosive movement.


If their Pilates programme is permanently slow, it may not prepare them for the demands of their sport.


Pilates can still be useful.


But speed should be considered part of specificity.


The Difference Between Actual Speed And Intent

This is a useful strength concept.


Sometimes a client may be trying to move quickly, but the load is heavy enough that the movement itself still appears slow.


That does not mean speed is irrelevant.


The intent to move quickly can influence force production.


For example, during a loaded squat, you might cue:

"Control down, drive up with intent."


The client may not visibly move fast.


But they are trying to generate force quickly.


This can be useful for strength and power development.


How To Cue Tempo Without Making Class Robotic

You do not need to turn every Pilates class into a metronome.


Simple cues work well.


Examples:

  • "Three counts down, one count up."

  • "Control the carriage home."

  • "Pause for two."

  • "Slow on the way back."

  • "Drive out with intent."

  • "Hold here."

  • "Don't let the springs pull you in."


These cues communicate the training goal without overwhelming the client.


Counting Tempo

Strength training sometimes uses a four-number tempo notation.


For example:

3-1-1-0


Depending on the convention, this may mean:

  • 3 seconds eccentric

  • 1-second pause

  • 1 second concentric

  • no pause at the top


Pilates instructors do not necessarily need to use formal tempo notation in class.


But understanding the concept can improve programming.


You can write tempo into your lesson plan where it is important.


Tempo Can Improve Class Structure

Tempo is also useful for class planning.


Instead of constantly changing exercises, you can repeat a movement with a new tempo.


For example:

Round 1:Normal squat tempo.

Round 2:Three-second lowering.

Round 3:Pause at the bottom.


Now the client gets familiarity with the exercise while the stimulus changes.


That can create progression without unnecessary choreography.


Tempo Can Reduce Reliance On Choreography

Pilates instructors often feel pressure to invent new exercises to keep class interesting.


But changing tempo can create variety without changing the movement.


This supports:

  • motor learning

  • mastery

  • strength progression

  • client confidence


A foundational exercise can become significantly more challenging simply by altering:

  • lowering speed

  • pauses

  • hold duration

  • concentric intent


You do not need twenty different variations.


When Slower Tempo Becomes Too Slow

There is a point where artificially slowing movement can stop being useful.


For example:

A 10-second lowering phase on every repetition may make the exercise exhausting, but it may not match the client's goal.


It can also:

  • reduce load excessively

  • alter normal movement rhythm

  • increase session time

  • limit total training volume


More time under tension is not automatically better.


Use enough to create the desired stimulus.


When Faster Tempo Becomes Too Fast

The opposite problem also occurs.


If speed causes:

  • uncontrolled movement

  • loss of range

  • loss of spring control

  • pain

  • inability to maintain the task

then the current speed may exceed the client's capacity.


You can reduce speed temporarily.


Then progressively build it again.


Tempo And Spring Resistance

Reformer springs make tempo particularly important.


The springs are constantly applying force.


If a client stops actively controlling the movement, the spring may accelerate the carriage.


This means tempo affects not just the muscle, but also how much the client is controlling the equipment.


A heavier spring may:

  • increase resistance during one phase

  • increase assistance during another


Tempo can therefore completely change how the exercise feels.


This is why instructors need to understand the mechanics of the movement rather than simply teaching:

"Heavy springs are harder."


Example: Scooter

Take a standing scooter.


If the client pushes the carriage out quickly and lets it snap back in, the exercise may rely heavily on momentum and spring recoil.


Now cue:

"Press out, hold for one, take three counts home."


The standing leg may suddenly have to work much harder.


You have changed:

  • balance demand

  • eccentric control

  • time under tension

without changing the spring.


Example: Standing Side Splits

During side splits, clients often move too quickly once they become confident.


A slower tempo can help:

  • control adduction

  • increase hip demand

  • reduce reliance on momentum

  • improve carriage control


But once they have strong control, you might also experiment with more powerful concentric intent if appropriate.


Again, the goal dictates the tempo.


Example: Arm Work In Kneeling

Imagine kneeling arm presses.


If the straps return quickly, the springs may pull the arms forward.


A slower eccentric return requires:

  • shoulder control

  • trunk control

  • greater time under tension


The same spring suddenly feels very different.


How Tempo Interacts With RPE

Tempo changes perceived effort.


A set that felt like RPE 6 at normal speed may become RPE 8 with a slower eccentric.


This is useful.


But it also means you need to reassess the total training dose.


If you increase:

  • load

  • repetitions

  • tempo

all at once, the client may suddenly be working far harder than intended.


Programming variables interact.


Tempo And Reps In Reserve

Tempo also changes how many repetitions the client has left.


For example:

10 squats at normal tempo may leave 5 reps in reserve.


The same 10 squats with a four-second eccentric may leave only 1 or 2.


That tells you tempo has meaningfully changed intensity.


This is why tempo should be considered alongside:

  • load

  • reps

  • sets

  • RPE

  • RIR

not separately.


Don't Manipulate Every Variable At Once

A common programming mistake is:

  • heavier springs

  • slower tempo

  • more repetitions

  • longer holds

all at the same time.


The client suddenly struggles and you do not know why.


A better approach is often to manipulate one major variable and observe the response.


For example:

Keep the same load.


Change the eccentric tempo.


See what happens.


That gives you much clearer programming information.


Tempo And Technique

Tempo can also expose technique issues.


When a client moves quickly, momentum may hide weaknesses.


Slow them down and you may notice:

  • pelvic rotation

  • knee control changes

  • shoulder elevation

  • trunk compensation


That can be useful diagnostically.


But slow movement should not become a permanent punishment for poor form.


Use it to build control.


Then progress.


Tempo As A Regression

Slowing movement can sometimes function as a regression.


For example, a client who feels unsafe during a dynamic task may benefit from slower speed.


But slowing can also increase muscular demand.


So it is not always easier.


This is why regressions and progressions are context-dependent.


The same variable can make one quality easier and another harder.


Tempo As A Progression

Tempo can also be a legitimate progression.


You might keep everything else constant and:

  • lengthen the eccentric phase

  • add a pause

  • increase hold duration

  • introduce faster concentric intent


That creates a new challenge without changing exercise setup.


This can be especially valuable in group programming.


Why "Slow And Controlled" Is Too Vague

"Slow and controlled" is one of the most common Pilates cues.


But it does not actually tell the client what you want.


How slow?


Which part?


Where should they pause?


What should they control?


A better cue is specific.


For example:

Instead of:

"Slow down."


Try:

"Take three counts to return the carriage."


Instead of:

"Control it."


Try:

"Pause before the stopper, then press out again."


Specific cues produce clearer movement.


Programming Tempo Intentionally

Before adding a tempo prescription, ask:

What am I trying to achieve?


If the goal is:

Motor Control

Use slower tempo to increase awareness.


Strength Endurance

Increase time under tension.


Eccentric Strength

Lengthen the lowering phase.


Isometric Strength

Add strategic holds.


Power

Use controlled eccentric movement with faster concentric intent.


Rehabilitation

Choose the tempo that matches symptom tolerance and stage of recovery.


That is far more useful than simply teaching every exercise at the same speed.


A Practical Tempo Framework For Pilates Instructors

When programming an exercise, consider:

1. What Is The Primary Goal?

Strength?

Endurance?

Control?

Power?

Motor learning?


2. Which Phase Matters Most?

Concentric?

Eccentric?

Isometric?


3. Does Tempo Improve The Stimulus?

If yes, programme it.


4. Is Tempo Compensating For Underloading?

If the client is very strong but using very light resistance, consider increasing load rather than making everything painfully slow.


5. Can The Client Maintain Control?

If not, reduce speed or load.


6. Does Speed Need To Progress Later?

For athletes and older adults, the answer may be yes.


Professional Reflection

Think about how often you change:

  • springs

  • exercises

  • props

compared with how often you deliberately change tempo.


Tempo is one of the simplest programming variables available.


It costs nothing.


It requires no extra equipment.


It can completely change the demand of an exercise.


But only if you know why you're using it.


The goal is not to make everything slower.


The goal is to make speed intentional.
